A Wind Instrument
Nature has its own language that has somehow become lost on many of our busy souls. In 2012 I created A Wind Instrument as a way to bridge a gap of communication between people and earth. The Instrument was suspended from a tree, swaying and chiming in the wind. Pedestrians along the Atlanta Beltline Eastside Trail had the opportunity to play the instrument as well, adding their own notes to the ever-changing rhythm conducted by the wind.
Strands of hand-domed pennies were hung like wind-chimes from a tree along a pedestrian trail. The pennies tapped against each other creating a soft rhythm. Different tones and notes layered into a unique and ever-changing composition conducted by the wind. The long strands enticed viewers to 'play' the instrument, encouraging a musical collaboration with nature. The pennies were strung in alternating patterns based on musical notation. Looking through the tree allowed one to imagine sheets of music suspended in three dimensions.
